How to Travel Cheaply to and Within Cyprus

road cyprusInexpensive travel opportunities are plentiful to and within Cyprus, the island paradise located in the eastern Mediterranean near Turkey. There’s so much to do in Cyprus, from pretty villages to explore to sandy beaches along the Mediterranean, to the Tombs of Kings and mosaics in Paphos, to the ancient city of Curium in Limassol. Travel to and within Cyprus need not cost an arm and a leg, in fact, there are plenty of good travel deals to be had. Here are some of the best ways to travel to and within Cyprus inexpensively:

To Cyprus

The principal international airport is in Larnaca (LCA) and the other international airports are Ercan (ECN) and Paphos International (PFO).

From New York City (JFK), the best flight deals to Larnaca cost about $1,000 round-trip (including taxes and fees) and the airlines that offer the best deals are European carriers: Aeroflot, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines.

From Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD), expect to pay about $1500 (including taxes and fees) for a round-trip flight. The airlines that offer the best deals are Lot–the Polish Airlines, United Airlines and Lufthansa.

From San Francisco (SFO), flights start at $2,000 round-trip (including taxes and fees). Air Canada, Lufthansa and United Airlines offer the best deals.

Within Cyprus

Cyprus by Bus offers an extensive network of bus travel between Nicosia, Limassol, Famagusta, and Larnaca and Limassol and Paphos. The first buses of the day depart at 5 a.m. and the last ones depart at 7 p.m.

The Transportation Organization of Nicosia District (OSED) offers public transportation within Nicosia (buses and a subway). A one-way ticket costs just 1.50 euros, a one-day pass is five euros and a seven-day pass is 15 euros and there are discounted fares for students and senior citizens.

In Paphos, the Paphos Transport Organization provides bus service for just 1.50 euros for a one-way ticket and five euros for a one-day pass. There are also reduced student fares.

The Limassol Airport Express transports passengers from Larnaca or Paphos to Limassol, where Cyprus’s best beaches are located. The fare is nine euros for a one-way adult ticket and four euros for a child’s (3-12) ticket.
